Hubballi: Close on the heels of the collegium narrowing down its choices to Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice S.R. Nayak for the post of Karnataka Lokayukta, Samaj Parivarthana Samudaya (SPS) president S.R. Hiremath has opposed the candidature of Justice S.R. Nayak.

Justice Nayak is a former chairman of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC). Highlighting the illegalities committed by Justice Nayak during his tenure as head of the commission, Mr Hiremath urged the Governor to reject his candidature if the Chief Minister, who is authorised to take the final decision on the choice, proposes his name. Alleging that Justice Nayak has committed irregularities with regard to the site allotted to him in Karnataka Judicial Employees House Building Co-operative Society (KJEHBCS), he said the former KSHRC chairman has bought a site measuring 6,175 square feet in Allalasandra and Chikkabammasagara in Bengaluru violating section 79A and 79B of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act. The site was meant for judicial employees to build civic amenities and high court judges are not eligible to purchase it as they are constitutional functionaries. He recalled that such an illegality has forced former Supreme Court judge, Shivaraj Patil, to step down as Lokayukta and also surrender the site in the name of his wife.
