Telangana girls in pre-quarters

Telangana ride on Nikhat, Sreeja heroics at TT Nationals in Hyderabad.

HyderabadTelangana women marched into the pre-quarterfinals while the men’s side found themselves in a do-or-die situation in the team event of the senior national and inter-state table tennis championships being played at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday. 
 
The women’s team — comprising Nikhat Banu, Varuni Jaiswal and Akula Sreeja — defeated Uttar Pradesh 3-0 and then, eased past Gujarat 3-1 to book their last-16 spot. 
 
Meanwhile, the men’s team lost to West Bengal 0-3 and must defeat Uttarakhand to qualify for the pre-quarters. In the women’s section, against Gujarat, Varuni lost the opening singles match to Frenaz Chipia 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 5-11. Nikhat righted Telangana’s course with a come-from-behind 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9 win over Gohil Divyaba.
 
Sreeja then beat Nirja Trivedi 13-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-8 and made it 2-1 before Nikhat, playing her reverse singles, took Telangana through with a straight-game 11-7, 11-9, 11-3 victory against Frenaz.
