New Delhi: Recently, India was given the crown of the world’s fastest growing aviation market in 2015.

But in a new report — on the world’s most punctual airports and airlines —  the country doesn’t show at all.

Worldwide statistics released by travel analysts OAG maps activity has named Japan’s Osaka Itami (with a punctuality rating of 93.85%)  the best small airport in the world for on-time performance.

And Tokyo Haneda is at the top in the large airports category with a rating of 91.25%.

India’s airports — all 125 of them including 18 international gateways —  are missing from the list.

But IndiGo Air finds is in sixth place on the list for top low cost airlines with a rating of 84.3%.

Meanwhile, Latvian carrier airBaltic has been ranked as the world’s best at punctuality “with an average of 94.39% of flights staying within 15 minutes of schedule”. This airline has been voted top second year running.

After Japan, the most punctual large airports are Munich, Germany (87.71%), Sao Paulo Guarulhos, Brazil (87.47%), Minneapolis (85.27%), Sydney (85.2%), Melbourne, Australia (85.02%), Singapore Changi (84.75%), Atlanta (84.38%), Frankfurt, Germany (84.12%) and Seattle (83.56%).

India is not on the list for “the most improved airports” either with Milan Bergamo in Italy scoring 86.9% in 2015, compared to the 62.8% it managed in 2014.

New Airport naming policy
The Centre is considering to put in place a policy on naming of new airports in the country, under which they will known after the city’s name and not certain personalities or icons amid the on-going controversy over naming of the new Chandigarh airport.

The civil aviation ministry keeps getting requests from different political parties to name airports after certain icons and personalities, more particularly after the change of regime at the Centre or in states and a firm and long-term policy in this regard is needed to end practice.
