Hyderabad: A 40-year-old plumber who snatched chains from women who were waiting at bus stops and hospitals after diverting their attention was arrested on Thursday.

Police seized property worth Rs 7 lakh from his possession.

North Zone deputy commissioner of police N. Prakash Reddy said Hussain Khan 40, of Ghatkesar, was involved in nearly six cases under different police stations in the city. “His targets were women standing at bus stops or outside hospitals and waiting for transport.”

He added, “the man used to make acquaintance with the women after  a conversation and then would offer them lift in his car. If they accepted his offer, he used to drive them to an isolated location and steal their jewellery after diverting their attention,” the DCP said.

During investigation, cops found that Hussain had a record that included chain snatching, house burglary and vehicle thefts. He was earlier arrested by the Nallakunta police for offences in 2007 and convicted for two months. After his release, he changed the way he worked, police said.

Police said Hussain was involved in two cases in Ghatkesar, near Hyderabad, and one case each in Gopal-puram, Tukaramgate, Chilkalguda and Karkhana police stations in the city. Hussain Khan was produced in court sent to judicial remand, police said.
