Special edition Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens unveiled
The list includes two variants each in designo manufaktur' and Exclusive Edition categories
Although most of the special edition cars are not sold in India, it would be an injustice to ignore them. Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled four special edition G-Wagens and all four of them have different cosmetic changes. They are further classified into two categories - ‘designo manufaktur’ edition and Exclusive Edition. Let’s check these out.
designo manufaktur
For the record, the designo manufaktur range of the G-Class has been available in Europe since 2015. Mercedes-Benz says that the individualisation range stands for tailor-made appointments, traditional workmanship and the highest quality. Alright. We won’t be arguing on any of those!
The 2017 range of designo manufaktur editions is available for the Mercedes-Benz G 350 d and G 500. The obsession with the colour black is quite evident as the AMG five-spoke alloy wheels, side rub strips, the three louvres of the grille, exterior mirrors and the spare wheel cover are finished in obsidian black. With only three colour options available for the body paint - designo magma red, designo mystic white and obsidian black - the exterior is nothing short of an eye-candy.
Inside the cabin, Mercedes-Benz has continued to make the ‘designo manufaktur’ editions as special as it can. So you get black designo nappa leather with colour-coordinated red stitching on the upholstery and the steering wheel, trim in black designo piano lacquer with red seat belts, black grab handles in the roof liner and a ‘designo manufaktur’ badge on the centre console. Customers are also pampered with other stuff, that comes standard with these special editions, such as the sport package that includes exterior stainless steel package, exclusive package which includes seat comfort package and the chrome package.
Exclusive Edition
The exclusive edition treatment is available for the G 63 and the G 65 variants of Mercedes’ G-Wagen as well. How are these different from the ‘designo manufaktur’ editions? Well, on the outside, there is a model-specific stainless steel underguard, AMG sport strips on the sides, rub strips in dark aluminium look and spare wheel cover in the vehicle colour. The G 63 gets five-twin-spoke alloy wheels in matt black with high-sheen spokes and the G 65 is offered with ceramically polished, five-twin-spoke alloy wheels. For the body, the matt paint finish AMG monza grey mango is exclusive to this special edition.
The story is equally great inside the cabin. The standard trim includes the designo Exclusive package with two-tone, leather-lined dashboard and AMG sports seats with two-tone leather upholstery. Customers have a choice of two-tone designo nappa leather in six colours, or as an alternative two-tone seats in designo nappa leather in three colours with seat side bolsters in black carbon leather. Other options include a choice between AMG Carbon or black designo piano lacquer trim, designo seat belts in red, leather-clad grab handles and a two-tone AMG performance steering wheel which matches the seat colours.
That’s a whole lot of customisations for just the European market. Mercedes-Benz won’t even take it to the US, which is one of its biggest markets in the world. If you could, or, if you want to, which of the two special editions would you put your money on?
