The C-segment sedan will also likely come powered by a petrol as well as a diesel motor, which will get mated to both manual and automatic gearboxes as options.

Tata Motors likes to cover all segments, as it covers only about 60% of the segments with its current portfolio. It believes that the 40 per cent that is left out will be crucial to gain a larger slice of the passenger car market.

So, with the introduction of the new models, Tata Motors aims at the third spot as the largest automaker in India by the turn of 2019-2020. Market leader Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai hold the top two spots respectively.

Tata Motors met with success with the Tata tiago hatchback, which had an overwhelming reception, since its launch in April 2016 in India. So, this has revived Tata’s hopes of winning the third spot, as a high volume seller in India in the passenger car market. Tata is also gearing up for the launch of the Tata Hexa, which is scheduled for launch in January 2017.

As Tata Motors plans to launch products in the remaining 40 per cent segments, it will launch what it has not had so far in its portfolio. So, Tata Motors will begin developing a compact SUV, premium hatchback and C-segment sedan. The launch of these models will take place in a span of 4-5 years.

The C-segment sedan will be priced in its range of Rs. 8-11 lakhs and so it will sit above the Kite 5 and the Zest. The rivals of the Tata Motors’ C-segment sedan will be the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Maruti Ciaz Volkswagen Vento and the Fiat Linea.

The C-segment sedan will also likely come powered by a petrol as well as a diesel motor, which will get mated to both manual and automatic gearboxes as options. Eyeing new potential customers, Tata Motors has made huge investments to make its presence felt in all the segments, as it runs up to around Rs. 3,500-4,000 crores for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
