The top-spec Asta (o) petrol comes for Rs 7.76 lakh, whereas the equivalent diesel model is priced at Rs 9 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).

When Hyundai launched the Elite i20 in 2014 without the option of an automatic transmission, it befuddled us. The company has finally void the gap by launching the Elite i20 Automatic at a cost Rs 9.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Moreover, Hyundai has also launched the updated Asta (o) variant. The top-spec Asta (o) petrol comes for Rs 7.76 lakh, whereas the equivalent diesel model is priced at Rs 9 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).

What’s more is that Hyundai has also launched the updated Asta (o) variant which gets 6 airbags and prices now stand at Rs 7.76 lakh for the range-topping petrol and Rs 9 lakh for the equivalent diesel (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

The two-pedal version of the hatchback is offered only in the ‘Magna’ variant and gets an engine all to itself. While we do wish it came with the top-end Asta (o)/Asta grade as well, at least now Elite i20 buyers have the option of an autobox. Under the bonnet is a 1.4-litre MPi dual VTVT petrol engine that produces 100PS of power at 6,000rpm and 132Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The motor comes paired with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. As you’d expect, this isn’t going to be a very sporty transmission, but it will make city commutes less hassling.

Since the Elite i20 AT is available only in the Magna grade, the feature list will miss out on bits like ABS, rear parking sensors, the rear camera, height-adjustable seatbelts, alloy wheels and even the touchscreen AVN system. What it will offer is dual airbags, a flip-key, blue ambient lighting, a 2-DIN entertainment system with 4 speakers, 4 power windows, AUX/USB/Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted controls. It also gets rear AC vents, a cooled glovebox and electrically adjustable wing mirrors.

The Elite i20 will now be the only car in its segment to offer 6 airbags and the addition of an automatic transmission will put it at a better standing against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno AT, the Honda Jazz AT and VW Polo GT TSI. At a price of Rs 9.02 lakh, it’s more expensive than the Baleno CVT, Jazz CVT and costs nearly the same as the Polo GT TSI.
