After the dieselgate emission scandal, Volkswagen stopped offering the 1.5-litre TDI engine in India. Now, amendments have been made to fix it. The German manufacturer is planning to offer it back with the all-new Ameo. The Ameo was launched only in petrol variant a few months ago and now, a diesel avatar will be launched soon. Some dealerships across Mumbai have even started accepting bookings for the Ameo diesel at a token amount of Rs 10,000.

Launched in its petrol avatar a few months back, the diesel variant of the car is set to be launched on September 27. And ahead of the launch, we have learnt that dealerships are now accepting bookings for the Ameo diesel at a token amount of Rs 10,000 across Mumbai.

With the petrol version of the car priced at around Rs 5.3 lakh (ex-showroom), expect the diesel to demand a premium; at around the Rs 6.5 lakh-mark for the base Trendline variant, going all the way up to Rs 8.5 lakh for the top-spec Highline.

Good for 104PS of power and 230Nm of torque, the powerplant first found space on the Vento before it was planned to make way into the Polo and the Skoda Rapid. The ARAI fuel efficiency of the engine is rated at around 22km for a litre of fuel burnt.

It is the same engine which was fit with a ‘cheat software’ to rig emission tests. The Wolfsburg-based carmaker has been taking corrective measures to repair damages from the scandal globally and will be hoping that it has done enough in terms of Indian emission norms to save itself from shame again.
