TRAI gives clean chit to Reliance Jio, says free offer is valid tariff plan
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had earlier told TRAI that Happy New Year offer does not violate regulator's rules.
Mumbai: Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday, after weeks of hearing arguments and counter-arguments, has given clean chit to Reliance Jio in a dispute related to its free data and free voice call offer.
Telecom regulator’s ruling will enable Reliance Jio to continue with its Happy New Year free tariff plan till March 2, 2017 when the offer under present scheme ends, CNBC-TV18 reported.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had earlier told TRAI that Jio's free tariff plan does not violate any rules issued by the telecom regulator.
Earlier, cellular operators Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel had approached Telecom Disputes Redressal Tribunal (TDSAT) with an appeal to invalidate Jio's Happy New Year offer valid till March 2. They argued that Jio's free offer was for initial three months till December 30 last year and an extension beyond 90 days' free period violated TRAI rules.
