Mumbai: The government on Thursday brought forward the deadline to use Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps and for buying airline tickets by weeks two from December 15 earlier to December 2, the Press Trust of India reported on Thursday.

"Use of old Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps and for airline tickets will be allowed till December 2 as against December 15 announced earlier," PTI said.

Relaxation in use of these notes was granted given the urgency of accessing these basic services and, apart form that, the cash-strapped people were still lining up in long queues outside banks and across teller machines.

On November 24, over-the-counter acceptance of discarded high value notes facility was discontinued with an aim to stop same people from rushing to banks again and again, the practice that deprived other people from accessing the OTC exchange facility.
