Mumbai: Have you had to spend cumbersome time in linking Aadhaar details with those of your PAN card? Income tax department has a remedy for you. Due to some mismatches in personal details on Aadhaar card and PAN card, people failed to link both the documents crucial for filing returns.

The income tax department argues that once it concludes the exercise of linking Aadhaar with PAN, filing of income tax returns would be much more easier for the taxpayer.

"This will be useful for e-verification of income tax returns using OTP (one-time password) sent to their mobile registered with Aadhaar," NDTV quoted the tax department as saying.

The I-T department has started an online facility on its portal to make the exercise further easier, simpler and less time consuming. Here are few things that you should know about how you can link the two documents necessary for filing income tax returns.

1) If actual data of a person in central Aadhaar data base differs slightly from what is mentioned on the Aadhaar cards, the tax department will send a One Time Pasword to registered mobile phone number of the user.

2) If the name on Aadhaar is completely different from what is written on PAN card, then tax department would ask card holder to change his or her name either on PAN card or the Aadhaar card to make them similar.

3) I-T department has placed two separate hyperlinks on its e-filing website -- https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ -- one to update changes in existing PAN data or for application of new PAN by an Indian or a foreign citizen, the report said.

4) There is another website using which a taxpayer can log in into Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal facility to update his or her Aadhaar details. Scanned copies of proof of corrected data can also be uploaded.

5) The website started by the income tax department -- incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in -- has a new link on its homepage for connecting Aadhaar with PAN of a taxpayer. No need to log in or be registered on e-filing website. "This facility can be used by anyone to link their Aadhaar with PAN," the report said.
