MSP of kharif crops raised
As per the Cabinet decision, the MSP for Jowar has been increased by Rs 120 per quintal and Ragi by Rs 253 per quintal.
New Delhi: Amid delayed monsoon, mostly in the northern regions, the government on Wednesday announced an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of all kharif crops for the 2019-20 crop year, running from July 2019 to June 2020. While the MSP for paddy has been raised marginally by 3.7 per cent, or by Rs 65 a quintal to Rs 1,815, the price for oilseeds, pulses and cereals saw a substantial hike.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Briefing the media, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “The monsoon has been delayed this year and it is worrisome for the farmers as well as the government. But according to the weather department’s forecast, the situation would improve and the monsoon would be normal.”
As per the Cabinet decision, the MSP for Jowar has been increased by Rs 120 per quintal and Ragi by Rs 253 per quintal. “The MSP of tur, moong and urad pulses also have been raised by Rs 215, Rs 75 and Rs 100, respectively, for the 2019-20 crop season,” the minister said.
The paddy MSP fixed is 50 per cent higher than the cost of production at Rs 1,205/quintal, the minister said.
“The minimum support price, which the Centre guarantee to pay to farmers, has also been raised in case of groundnut by Rs 200 a quintal and soyabean by Rs 311. In addition, medium cotton MSP has been raised by Rs 105 quintal and long cotton MSP by Rs 100 a quintal,” he added.
The minister said the price of ragi has been increased to Rs 3,150 and jowar to Rs 2,550 for hybrid and Rs 2,570 for Maldandi variety.
Maize MSP has been hiked by Rs 60/quintal to Rs 1,760, while that of bajra has been raised by Rs 50/quintal to Rs 2,000.
Tomar said the MSP of tur has been increased by Rs 125/quintal to Rs 5,800, while that of urad by Rs 100 to Rs 5,700 and moong by Rs 75 to Rs 7,050.
