Governments are throwing environmental and safety norms to the winds.
GO 19 issued by the TS forests department of Telangana state on May 3, making it easier for industries to axe trees, created a furore and was challenged in the High Court. The order said permission to cut trees would be deemed to have given if officials did not respond in three days.
TS has issued 19 GOs of which 14 pertain to labour, two each to municipal administration and revenue and one to general administration. AP issued seven GOs, of which one is by environment department relaxing norms for cutting of trees, two each by industries and labour departments and one each by MAUD and revenue.
This apart, hundreds of circulars were issued by the departments to their staff on how to be liberal while giving approvals. The main aim is to meet EoDB parameters for better rankings.
