Government is targeting 100 GW of solar and 60 GW of wind energy capacity by 2022.

New Delhi: In a good news for Modi government’s push towards clean energy, wholesale solar power price touched a new record low in the bidding held for Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan.

In the bidding for the solar park, the tariff dipped to a record low of Rs 2.62 per unit.

This price is even lower than NTPC’s average coal-based power tariff of Rs 3.20 per unit. “Another milestone towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of clean affordable power for all: Bhadla Solar Park achieves tariff of Rs 2.62/unit,” tweeted power minster Piyush Goyal after the auction.

With solar power prices falling, India could exceed the renewable energy targets it set at the Paris climate accords.

“Bhadla Ph-IV Solar Park results in a historic lowering of tariffs. Phelan Energy (50MW) and Avaada Power (100 MW) have bagged projects at Rs 2.62/unit. Softbank Cleantech has won 100 MW capacity at Rs 2.63/unit,” said senior government official.

Solar parks are a vital piece to India’s solar future and were designed to reduce bottlenecks and bring down large-scale project development costs by allocating land and providing transmission infrastructure, big challenges for solar project development in India.
