Bank issued notice over money laundering
The bank, when contacted by this newspaper said that they had received an inquiry from the revenue intelligence agencies last week.
New Delhi: Income Tax department, enforcement directorate and FIU among other intelligence agencies are investigating money laundering taking place in banks after demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
Revenue intelligence agencies are learnt to have send notice to a prominent private sector bank about a suspicious transaction which some sources quoted to be as high as Rs 100 crore.
The bank, when contacted by this newspaper said that they had received an inquiry from the revenue intelligence agencies last week. “It was a routine inquiry and we have replied to the concerned agencies. As per norms when a high value transaction takes place FIU has to be informed. And we had followed the norm by informing the agency about the transaction,” said a senior official from the bank.
However, he refused to speak on what was the amount involved in the suspicious transaction. Meanwhile what has aggravated the cash crunch situation is that people have not been able to take out money for their monthly expenses after pay-day due to rationing of cash.
