Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi won from Varanasi constituency with 1,52,513 votes even as the BJP has decided to conduct the crucial Parliamentary party meeting on June 7. Modi is also visiting the party headquarters in New Delhi today at 7 pm.

The BJP-led NDA on Tuesday was leading in 280 seats to cross the majority in trends available for 528 seats, while the Congress also crossed the 100-mark in terms of leads, the Election Commission data showed. The BJP was ahead in 234 seats at 10:30 am, and won the Surat seat in Gujarat uncontested. The Congress-led INDIA bloc was leading in 200 seats, a performance that appeared much better than what was predicted in the exit polls.

The BJP appeared suffering big losses in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi party was leading in 33 seats. In Andhra Pradesh, the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP was ahead, while the BJD looked headed for a rout in Odisha in Lok Sabha elections.

The counting for the Lok Sabha elections-2024 commenced at the counting centres across the country on Tuesday at 8 am. The postal ballot votes were first counted and after 30 minutes Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were opened in the presence of election observers and polling agents deputed by the political parties concerned.

The final results will likely be clear by noon. The 2024 election is notable for being the second-longest in India's electoral history, reflecting the logistical challenges and the vast scale of conducting elections in the world's largest democracy. Tight security measures are in place to ensure a smooth and fair counting process.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of counting of Lok Sabha polls as well as the State Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

In coordination with the District Magistrates, Collectors and the Police departments of the States concerned, the ECI took various steps for the smooth conduct of the counting process.

The voting took place in seven phases over a span of six weeks, from April 19 to June 1, across 543 constituencies. A party or coalition needs to secure at least 272 seats to achieve a majority and form the government.

The great Indian general elections ended on June 1 after 64.2 crore people out of an eligible 97 crore cast their votes. Among them there were 31.2 crore women who exercised their franchise. The biggest credit goes to the little over 64 crore people who braved the elements to exercise their franchise, a majority of whom having voted in the sweltering heat of a particularly severe Indian summer.

The Lok Sabha comprises a total of 545 seats. Out of these, elections will be conducted by the ECI to fill 543 seats. The remaining two seats are filled by nomination of representatives of the Anglo-Indian Community if the President feels that this community has not been represented adequately.

Out of the elective seats, 79 are reserved for SC and 41 for ST.
