Hyderabad: A 26-year-old woman has approached the police alleging that some persons tried to set her house on fire on Saturday after she refused to accept the marriage proposal of one Shiva Kumar.

In December, Shiva was arrested for harassing the woman. After coming out on bail he started harassing her. His family also harassed her to make her marry Shiva. When she refused they torched her house to kill her and her family, police said.

The victim, Bhavani, 26, is a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Jubilee Hills. A few months ago a new wine shop started near an electrical sub-station here.

Seven families set up huts near the wine shop and started shops and eateries. Bhavani’s father used to buy scrap from the wine shop and her mother ran a eatery in front of their hut.

A few days ago, Padma, Murali Reddy and Krishna Reddy, who usually beg near the wine shop, had an argument with her parents. On Monday night, they drank alcohol and later poured kerosene on Bhavani’s hut and set it ablaze.

The fire destroyed two nearby huts. Padma climbed a tree in panic and was rescued by the police.

Based on a complaint from Bhavani, a case was registered against Padma, Murali Reddy, Krishna Reddy and Shiva Kumar and his mother Jayamma. Police arrested the trio. A hunt is on for Shiva and Jayamma.
