Guard molests IIT-M student at Sarang, held

Chennai: A man working as a security guard in IIT-Madras has been arrested for allegedly attempting to molest a 20-year-old IIT girl student during Sarang- the annual cultural fest in the campus, on Saturday.

The arrested was identified as Mustaffa Ahamed from Morigaon district in Assam, who is working as a guard of a private agency engaged in  security related work at IIT -M campus. The Kotturpuram police had booked the suspect under various sections, including assault on woman with intention to outrage her modesty and wrongful restraint along with provisions of Tamil Nadu prohibition of harassment of women Act. According to police, the incident occurred on the third night of Sarang and at a distance of 15-minute walk from the Sarang stage.

The victim was waiting in front of the bio-tech department for her friend. The incident was reported to police five hours later around 9 am. The suspect had been arrested and remanded, the police said. When contacted, Bhaskar Ramamurthy, Director of IIT- M, tried to brush aside the incident saying it was not brought to his notice. “If a student is taking a walk alone at night we can’t help it,” he said.
