Bengaluru: Two sisters, who were studying engineering, hanged themselves at their house in Balaji Layout on Monday night after their parents came to know about their love affairs. While Tejaswini, 22, was in her final year of the course, Ranjitha, 20, was in the second year.

Their father Malleshappa, who runs a provision store, told the sisters on Monday night that the family is looking for a marriage alliance for Tejaswini, while the search is also on for a prospective groom for Ranjitha. The two sisters pleaded with their parents that they wanted to study further and did not want to get married at this stage. But Malleshappa told them that marriage should not come in the way of their education, deeply disappointing the sisters.

To stall the marriage plans, Tejaswini reportedly told her father that she was in love with her classmate. Ranjitha, emboldened by her sister’s revelation, told their parents that she too was going around with her college mate. A shocked Malleshappa berated his two daughters and asked them to get their boyfriends to the police station to settle the issue. After heated arguments, the girls and their parents went to bed around midnight.

Malleshappa got up early and went to the girls’ room around 4 am and found both his daughters hanging from the ceiling with a saree. He rushed them to a nearby hospital, but they were declared brought dead. “We found a suicide note. The sisters have written that they were sorry that they disappointed their father and family, and sought forgiveness. They have not blamed anyone,” a senior police officer said.
