Rameswaram: In a significant haul, about 60 kg of ‘Ganja’ stuffed in three sacks and allegedly meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka via the sea route, either from Pudukottai or Ramanathapuram coast, was seized in Pudukkottai district on Saturday.

The seizure effected in the wee hours at a spot near coastal Kottaipattinam in Pudukkottai district, was in pursuance of a tip-off received by the Central Customs department in Rameswaram, sources said.

The Ramanathapuram assistant commissioner of Customs immediately dispatched a patrol party to Pudukkottai district that led to the seizure, sources said, adding, they were looking for the alleged smugglers who are said to be at large.

It may be noted the long coastline from Pudukkottai to Ramanathapuram that extends up to Rameswaram island in that stretch continue to be harbour safe pick-up and landing points for shipping contraband drugs and also essential
articles of daily use to Sri Lanka.
