Kolkata: Three persons were arrested for attempting to rape on a mentally challenged girl inside a ward office of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in the southern part of the city this morning, the police said.
The trio, security person of Ward No 63 Taufir (37), and two of his friends Mohammed Sainul (45) and Shah Alam (37) were arrested for attempting to rape a 20-year-old girl inside the office on A J C Bose Road, they said.
The incident happened last night when the girl was followed by Sainul and Alam while she was moving on A J C Bose Road, a police officer said.
She left her home at Topsia and was roaming in the Park Street-Mallickbazar area in search of a rented accommodation when the duo started following her, he said.
"The duo then approached her and offered help in finding a rented accommodation and took her to the office of Ward No 63. The duo were drunk and after reaching the ward office, they along with Sainul, offered her food and alcohol and then attempted to rape her," the officer said.
The girl refused to consume liquor and started screaming for help, hearing which locals rushed to her rescue, he added.
Local residents detained the trio and informed the Shakespeare Sarani Police station who arrested them under IPC section 120(B) (criminal conspiracy to commit offence punishable with death, or rigorous imprisonment and 365 (kidnapping or abducting).
