Conversion of residential buildings of Panampilly Nagar poses a challenge.

Kochi: The authorities are clueless on how to comply with the order of the High Court to the Greater Cochin Development Authority and City Corporation not to grant permission for conversion of residential buildings of Panampilly Nagar Housing Colony into commercial places.

Despite submission of various representations, the authorities have not taken any steps to curb the conversion of residential buildings.

Panampilly Nagar Housing Colony, the once most sought after residential area of in Kochi, has turned into a busy commercial street during the last couple of decades.

Most of the houses have been converted to shops while the vacant plots have been occupied by big hotels. There are more than 86 hotels in the colony.

Corporation Town Planning Committee chairperson Shainy Mathew told DC that the civic body has not taken any decision on what should be the action based on the HC directive.

Justice V. Chitambaresh passed the order on a batch of petitions filed by the residents.
