Flood rescue hero honoured on Republic Day

Yunus' gallantry saved the marooned.

Chennai: The selfless bravery of S. Mohammad Yunus (32), who rescued a couple of thousand marooned people during the December 2015 floods, was recognised with the awarding of the Tamil Nadu government’s Anna Medal for Gallantry award 2016. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa gave the award to him at the 67th Republic Day celebrations on the Marina on Tuesday.

On the first day of the deluge on December 1, 2015 Yunus and his team in a boat had rescued a pregnant lady and her husband from the flooded Urapakkam area on the outskirts of the city. She delivered a baby girl in a private hospital later and the grateful couple named her after “Yunus”.

Appreciating the brave and noble act of K. Rishi, (now 15 years old) who rescued two of his friends from the sea off Thirumullai Vasal, near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district on September 15, 2013, CM honoured him with the Anna Medal for Gallantry and a cheque for '1 lakh.  She also gave away the ‘Anna Medal for Gallantry to inspector, KK Nagar police station, M.S. Bhaskar and G. Srinivasan of Nanganallur.

Jayalalithaa also presented ‘Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony Award’, to M.B. Abubacker of Thanjavur for promoting communal and social harmony in Adhirampattinam and surrounding areas. The award carries a medal, '25,000 and a certificate.
