Tragic: Platform-train gap claims woman's life in Mumbai
CCTV camera footage shows 55-year-old woman from Surat falls on the tracks at Borivali railway station.
Mumbai: A 55-year-old woman was crushed to death while trying to get off a train in Mumbai on Wednesday.
At about 4.05am on January 27, Kiran Kothari, who had boarded the train for Surat at Borivali station panicked when the train started moving towards Bandra which is the place from where the Gujarat-bound train originates.
The video which has gone viral shows a man wearing an orange t-shirt running alongside the train, trying to help a woman (Ms Kothari) get off the train. He is seen running and initially, pulling out two bags. Finally, he is seen trying to get Ms Kothari off the train but she slips and falls into the gap where she dies on the spot.
The man has been identified as Tarun Sidhvi, a family member at whose place Ms Kothari was staying while visiting her sick brother. “Basically, they panicked and did not realise that the train would go to Bandra and then leave in the direction of Gujarat. It is a very sad incident as it could have been completely avoided," said a Government Railway Police (GRP) official on condition of anonymity.
According to GRP statistics, Borivali alone has seen 13 deaths due to people falling in the gap between the footboard and platform out of a total 28 such incidents on Western Railway (WR).
