HCU'sd life sciences department paying Rs 1 lakh penalty daily

Hyderabad: The department of life sciences at the University of Hyderabad has suffered about Rs 10 lakh loss in the last 10 days in the form of penalty levied by the cargo section of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
The department has not been able to take delivery of a consignment of lab material worth Rs 1 crore due to the agitation at the varsity following the suicide of Rohith Vemula
The department imports many items including chemicals, tissues, and samples of various disease germs as per the requirements for researches.
The cargo section of RGIA gives a certain time for delivery of the consignments after which a penalty of about 1 per cent on the cost of consignment is imposed.
As the consignment of life sciences' department is worth '1 crore, it has to pay Rs 1 lakh per day towards penalty.
The life sciences department ordered the import last month and the consignment reached the RGIA 10 days back.
Dean for the department of life sciences Dr P. Reddanna told DC that they would have to pay penalty now.
