A pet is not a toy that should be bought on a whim and then given away.

Abandoning pets has increased over the past 10 years. You name the breed and we have found it on the street — from the most abandoned breed, the Spitz, to Rottweilers, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Pugs, German Shepherds and even a Newfoundland that we found abandoned near a garbage bin in suburban Mumbai.

A pet is not a toy that should be bought on a whim and then given away. We hear about the many reasons that people want to give away their pets: a newborn in the family; the person who got the dog is getting married or does not have the time to look after it, etc.

Abandoned dogs are often found with health or behavioural problems. Some of them are also depressed due to the separation they experienced. We had one case of a dachshund that would not eat for days after being rescued. After a blood test, we realised that this was due to depression. Rescued dogs are treated for such issues (if any) and then put up for adoption.

Abandoned dogs and dogs looking for homes are usually put up for adoption. A strict process is followed the objective of which is to ensure that the adopter will look after the dog for the rest of its life no matter what.  Does the adopter have the time to take the dog for walks or take it to the veterinarian? Does everyone in the family want to adopt the dog? Who will look after the dog if the family goes for a vacation? Getting a pet needs to be a well-informed decision.

The Welfare Of Stray Dogs (WSD) advocates adopting dogs instead of buying them. By buying from breeders or pet shops, you will be supporting the cruel puppy-mill industry that jeopardises the welfare of dogs. You may also consider adopting a desi doggie from WSD.  Indian dogs are good-looking, loyal and intelligent. Veterinarians will vouch that they are tougher than purebreds. So, what are you waiting for! Adopt, don’t shop!

Adopters must ensure:

  •  The dog undergoes a health check-up
  •  Undergoes behavioural assessment
  •  Is vaccinated and sterilized
