NFGIO demands effective grievance cells in colleges

HYDERABAD: A delegation of National Federation of Girls Islamic Organisation (NFGIO) met education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy on Friday, demanding an effective grievance redressal system in institutes of higher education. The delegation submitted a memorandum to her office on Saturday.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), 567 students, including 224 girls, from the state had died by suicide in 2021. These grievance cells, governed by UGC guidelines, are responsible for inquiring into complaints and acting upon cases related to harassment in educational institutions.

Expressing concern at the spate of suicide cases, they questioned the efficiency of these cells. The recent deaths of medico Dr D. Preethi from Kakatiya Medical College, engineering student Rakshitha and a student from EFLU Anjali were  glaring instances of government apathy, they said.

The delegation demanded that every college should be mandated to establish grievance cells and warn them of dire consequences for noncompliance.
