Anoushka Shankar Bags Two Grammy Nominations
Renowned sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar has added another feather to her cap, receiving two prestigious GRAMMY nominations for her musical contributions. The artist, who has consistently pushed the boundaries of classical and contemporary music, earned nominations in two categories for her recent work. Shankar's solo album, Chapter II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn, was nominated for Best New Age, Ambient, or Chant Album, while her collaborative work, A Rock Somewhere—featuring Jacob Collier and Varijashree Venugopal—received a nomination for Best Global Performance.
Anoushka, the daughter of the legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, now has a total of 11 GRAMMY nominations to her name. Her career has been marked by a masterful blending of genres, incorporating classical, acoustic, electronic, and contemporary elements into her compositions.
Shankar's musical journey at the GRAMMYs began in 2002, when she received her first nomination in the then-named World Music category for her album Live at Carnegie Hall. This achievement made her the first Indian woman to be nominated and the youngest-ever nominee in that category. Shankar later made history as the first Indian musician to perform at the GRAMMYs in 2005, and she has continued to participate in the prestigious event, including a performance during the pandemic and another last year with Pakistani-origin artist Arooj Aftab.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be a significant year for Anoushka Shankar. Not only will she celebrate 30 years of performing, but she will also embark on tours across the U.S., Europe, and India in support of her highly anticipated third chapter in the Chapter series.
