Anupam Kher set to mark 40 years in cinema with over 500 flims
Anupam Kher, celebrated as the Marathon Man of Indian cinema with nearly 500 films to his credit, is set to mark 40 years in the industry in 2024. His rich legacy and remarkable body of work are being honored by YRF and Netflix in the lead-up to his upcoming direct-to-streaming film Vijay 69, which premieres on November 8. In this feel-good, slice-of-life film directed by Akshay Roy, Kher plays the character Vijay Matthew, who embodies a relentless zeal for life as he decides to pursue his dream of becoming a triathlon athlete.
After the film's trailer launch, Anupam Kher spoke with media representatives about his role, his experiences over four decades, and the themes explored in Vijay 69. Here are some excerpts from that discussion:
When asked about taking on older roles early in his career, Kher reflected, “I personally feel it’s the attitude of an individual. As creators, we are unique, with distinct fingerprints that don’t match anyone else. The world’s creator has made you special. If you become mediocre and start compromising, you lose that uniqueness. I learned this at the age of 28 when I was told, ‘Why are you playing an old man at such a young age?’ Despite that, I’m still remembered for my role in Saaransh. It’s all about the choices we make, and our director Akshay Roy chose to make Vijay 69.”
Kher continued to elaborate on his character, saying, “Playing Vijay feels parallel to my personal life. Having done 541 films, this is my 542nd. People often try to slot you, calling you a veteran or a legend. Recently, I received a call from a magazine regarding a lifetime achievement award. I want to send a strong message: don’t even think about giving me a lifetime achievement award for another 20 years. In Vijay 69, he reflects on his life and wishes to achieve something memorable as the Marathon Man. This film is relevant for every generation, inspiring younger audiences.”
He also shared a personal anecdote about learning to swim for this role: “I never knew how to swim until I was 68 for Vijay 69. I had a water phobia after being pushed into the water by a trainer during my struggling days. My first shoot was scheduled in a swimming pool, and I couldn’t participate. Learning to swim for this role is a significant achievement for me. After 40 years in this industry, taking on challenges is essential. Life is about seizing opportunities.”
Kher emphasized the longevity of an actor's career, stating, “We are fortunate to work in entertainment and can continue until we’re 90 if given the chance. Age is just a number. My mother inspires me; she never wanted to be restricted in her movements.”
Kher expresses a preference for being surrounded by people rather than isolating himself: “I don’t like solitude; I thrive in the company of others. I enjoy sharing meals with those around me, even during shoots. My grandfather believed that eating alone signifies loneliness. I don’t need that kind of solitude; a person is richer by the number of people he knows.”
In closing, Kher shared a powerful sentiment: “Dreams do not have an expiry date.” This timeless message resonates in Vijay 69, which chronicles the inspiring journey of a 69-year-old man who bravely takes on the challenge of competing in a triathlon. Netflix and YRF Entertainment proudly present this heartwarming film that encourages viewers to pursue their dreams at any age.
