Badhaai Ho, Ayushmann Khurrana's first Rs 100 crore film
Analysing Ayushmann Khurrana and his choice of films, trade experts are now billing him as the Amol Palekar of the new generation.
Amit Sharma’s Badhaai Ho collected Rs 3.5 crore on Saturday to become the 10th film this year to reach the coveted Rs 100 crore mark. The success of this budget film also means that Ayushmann Khurrana has also got his first Rs 100 crore-film marker, even though Gajraj Rao played the protagonist in this light comedy.
Analysing Ayushmann Khurrana and his choice of films, trade experts are now billing him as the Amol Palekar of the new generation. “While the other actors like Varun Dhawan and Tiger Shroff are doing massy and more expensive films, Ayushmann has chosen subtle comedy as his main genre for cinema. His simplicity is reflective of Amol Palekar’s, whose films not only just made money, but were also hits,” says a trade analyst.
Other ten films that were added in this successful league in 2018 include Amar Kaushik’s Stree starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor; Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi starring Alia Bhatt; Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety starring Karthik Aryan, Rajkumar Gupta’s Raid starring Ajay Devgn, Reema Kagti’s Gold starring Akshay Kumar, Remo D Souza’s Race 3 starring Slaman Khan, Ahmed Khan’s Baaghi 2 starring Tiger Shroff, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavat starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh and Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju starring Ranbir Kapoor.
However, some of the biggest and ambitious movies are yet slated to release in the year.
“With films like Thugs of Hindostan, 2.0, Kedarnath, Zero and Simmba releasing this November and December, we will surely have a few more films reaching that figure. Although what remains to be seen is whether there will be another dark horse that runs the race at the turnstiles to make it to Rs 100 crore,” says a trade expert.
