Kareena Kapoor Khan slayed her maternity look with outfits that didn’t just leave her comfortable, but got her way ahead of the sartorial game. And she’s not the only one – Meera Rajput, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Lara Dutta, Geeta Basra, Genelia D’souza and Avantika Malik are some of the names from showbizz who’ve totally rocked their style game with an underlying message: about how maternity wear has fast moved from drab to diva-licious! City based designers and stylists list some of the most important sartorial lessons to take notes from...

“While comfort is one fact that you can’t really negotiate with, there’s a whole lot of options available for new-age moms. You can opt for asymmetrical maxi dresses. Throw over a maxi shrug for an edgier spin. For those in the first semester of pregnancy, you can opt for flared skirts. Jazz the look further by throwing over a horizontal striped blazer,” says Nagashree, a city-based designer.

Speaking about how brighter, standout colours in maternity wear have arrived, Prerana Sarkar, a women’s designer reveals, “Maternity wear has been synonymous with pastel and sober shades. But not anymore. In fact, this is the perfect time to sport colours like oxblood, mustard, tangerine and other colours that are trending today.”

And for that understated vibe, you can always opt for thicker fabrics that promise to draw the attention away from the baby bump. “A lot of new age mommies to be want to wear clothes that don’t really scream “I’m-pregnant” in your face.

Hence, as a designer, my suggestion would be to opt for cotton crepe or medium weight wool. Sporting high waists are also in vogue,” adds Prerana.

For young mothers-to-be, who wish to step out in style, Manveen Kaur, a fashion stylist adds, “ Wear heels if you are comfortable. But swap them for sneakers to look and feel better. For minimalists, stick to monocrhome or even tights - provided they are not a snug fit. Key accessories play a huge role in making or breaking a look. So, ensure you have fun with scarves, bold chunky jewellery and thin belts in vivid hues.”
