I don't think I have the skills to make blockbuster films
Anurag Kashyap talks about his style and focus
He brings his personal experiences and sensibilities to bear on all his creative projects, says Anurag Kashyap
On how he chooses his films
Meri sabhi films bach jati hai, nuksan nahi hota hai hamein. I go with the story that engages and impacts me the most. It could be a love story, thriller. It entirely depends on the story. Dobbara, Kennedy are different films from my stable, though the audience expects gangster films from me. I have so much more to make. I always keep many scripts ready but the one which receives a green light I go with it first.
On the importance of travel
Travelling brings you close to reality and enriches and expands your mind. If you live only in your village, your thought process is limited. When I started off from my village, I set out to make just one film. Surprisingly, I’ve made so many films.
On style elements
All my films will have my signature elements. Main jaisa hoon waisi filmen hi banaunga. I have that sense of reality in me so I go with real sensibilities in my films. I also give loads of importance to music.
On Ranbir Kapoor and Animal
I haven’t watched Animal, I’ve just come back. But Ranbir is my favourite actor, and not only that, I consider him and Alia to be the best acting couple in the country! So much of talent in one house!
On whether he’ll be directing Ranbir and Alia
I make small films. How can I cast them?
On whether he’ll ever cast super actors or make blockbuster films
I have tried once and I feel I don’t have that skill. It’s not essential a filmmaker should only make blockbuster films. Cinema should be something that you wish to make. You need a different skill to make blockbuster films. I don’t have that skill.
