I was born to do Gully Boy, says Ranveer Singh
Ranveer Singh plays a struggling rapper in film inspired by the lives of rappers Divine and Naezy.
The much-awaited film of the year Gully Boy’s trailer was launched on Wednesday. Ranveer who plays a struggling rapper in the film was at his best in the trailer. Known to be extremely energetic on sets, he talks about his experience of working with the rappers.
“It was great fun being among the real boys. Interacting with them was the fondest memory; working on the dialogues and collaborating was the experience. When somebody told me about the script of Gully Boy, I told them that it is my film. If any other actor had been a part of this film instead of me then I would have burned with jealousy. I was born to do Gully Boy and I knew only I can pull off this character,” Ranveer said.
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy also features Alia Bhatt, Vijay Raaz, among others. The film is inspired by the life of Divine and Naezy (Naved Shaikh), who are underground rappers from Mumbai. However Zoya reveals it is a fictional story. She says, “This is not a biopic. This is a completely fictional story; they and their music inspire it. They were the people who took me into their lives and showed me how to do it. It's not a biopic but a fiction drama.”
Zoya who has previously directed films such as Dil Dhadkne Do and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara tells us what made her helm a film on rappers. She says, “When I was editing Dil Dhadkne Do in 2014 that time my editor actually showed me a video of an artiste called Naezy who was 21 years of age and he had put up a song called Aafat. That’s the first time I saw real and authentic rap what now is called as Gully Rap. It just stuck in my head and from that moment, till now, it just took me on a journey to make this film.”
