Exclusive: Akshay Kumar bats for stronger judiciary
The actor, who plays a lawyer in the recently-released Jolly LLB 2, hopes for swifter justice in Indian courts.
Akshay Kumar is currently raking in applause for his role as a lawyer in Subhash Kapoor’s Jolly LLB 2. He, however, is concerned about loopholes in our legal system, mainly about the time taken for justice to be delivered.
“I think there’s a need for quicker judgements,” he says. “Cases in our country go on for ever. At times, the person in question is no more, but the case is still pending. That’s rather unfortunate and something that should definitely change.”
The star feels that people whose voices matters must speak up against social injustices. “I do believe that as actors, we have certain leverage, as our voices are heard sometimes clearer than some politicians’, through the power we possess on our social media platforms. But with that power come great responsibilities.”
Hoping for a swifter and stronger legal process, he says, “I don’t think it matters whether you’re a big guy or a little guy. It takes more than an actor to change a criminal’s mind. Hence, it’s the judicial system that needs to be stronger than the people.”
Akshay cites the example of countries, where laws are harsh, and justice delivered is swifter. “Take Singapore, fore example. Criminals are scared to exist out there. Their prisons are empty, because the price one pays for criminal behaviour is horrendous.”
