It’s part fiction, says the real Gunjan
There had been no arm-wrestling bouts
Flt. Lt. Gunjan Saxena has told the Delhi High Court that she was not given any opportunity to raise objections regarding the content of the film Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl produced by Karan Johar and starring Janhvi Kapoor, and that she faced no discrimination on the basis of gender during her service with the Indian Air Force as depicted in the film.
She however clarified that the film wasn’t intended to be a documentary but was merely inspired by her life.
The Delhi High Court has refused to restrain the release of the film in theatres which have opened in some parts of India, and asked Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, who has initiated legal proceedings against Karan Johar and others, to sort out the content issues in the film with Johar’s lawyers. The Court also agreed to watch the film.
In an affidavit, the real Gunjan Saxena had also said there had been no arm-wrestling bouts between her and the male officers at the Air Force Academy, Sanjay Jain said. The affidavit presented before Justice Rajiv Shakdher reads, “The Deponent does not claim that everything that is shown in the movie has happened with her in her real life. However, the deponent believes that the message sought to be conveyed through the movie is to motivate young women to join the Indian Air Force and, on a broader canvas, the aim is to inspire young women to pursue their dreams, not to doubt themselves and to work hard towards their goals.”
Gunjan Saxena, released on Netflix, has generated a lot of controversies.
