You recently spoke about your struggle with depression?
We all know that mental health is important, but when it comes to talking about matters like depression, OCD or anxiety, I feel people find it difficult to seek help even from a close friend. There is a wrong notion that it is a weakness, a fault or that it makes a person less in some way. This stigma needs to be destroyed.
Why didn’t you speak about your depression before?
I have never suffered from clinical depression. But we all know what depression feels like; we all have been there or will experience it at some point in our life. There is no escaping the dark side of life.
So you haven’t experienced depression first-hand?
I have seen it from extremely close quarters, but it pains me to see that people suffer in silence when there are simple ways to treat it. They just need to reach out, get help and realise that it is not their fault.
Does your own vulnerability empower you to help others?
Our vulnerabilities make us human. I am proud of Deepika Padukone, who so courageously came forth.
