Marriage can be ugly if it's not to the right person, says Kangana

Kangana Ranaut shares her views about marriage as an institution, particularly in the context of her debut production, Tiku Weds Sheru, directed by Sai Kabir. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and debutant Avneet Kaur.

Her take on marriage

“The institution of marriage is a wonderful one, feel those of us who are unmarried. But those who are married seem disillusioned with it. They feel those who are unmarried are enjoying all the romance. By those standards, I’m in a hugely romantic phase of life, being unmarried!”

Are marriages made in heaven?

“In Tanu Weds Manu, the couple initially didn’t want to get married, and then became determined to wed. Similarly, Tiku and Sheru can’t stand each other to begin with, but later want to get married. I feel marriage is not something in human control. It seems like partners are allotted in heaven, and we tie the knot on Earth.”

Marriage as a societal and parental goal

“Meri mother mujhe har baat pey bachchpn se yehi bolti thi…‘Aisa Karogi toh tumeh ladke kaise melange?’ (My mom would always tell me even as a child, ‘If you act like this, how will you find a boy?) (smiles)”

Marriage completes a person...

“Without a partner, my life is 95% complete. If someone is to come into my life, that person has to bring in that remaining 5%, to make me complete. If he doesn’t come with that 5%, then it’s better not to come into my life and mess it up.

Everything is beautiful and wonderful with me at the moment; I am enjoying my professional and personal life, in the company of those who are dear to me.
Everyone has their own personality – qualities like being strong, outspoken, etc. You need to find someone who likes these qualities in you. If you get such a partner, it is good. If not, it’s better to be on your own, rather than be stuck with people who you don’t like.”

The timing of marriage

“Marriage is a personal thing. It will happen whenever it has to happen.”

Changing face of marriage

There’s a lot of ugliness in today’s marriages, and we have to deal with a lot of trauma. In love marriages, the divorce rate is high, but in arranged marriages it is less than 5%. Expectations have changed.

In Tiku Weds Sheru, we have shown the changes that have happened in society and in its perception of marriage.”, says Kangana
