Merry Christmas: Vijay Sethupathi reveals why he wants to play a villain?

Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, renowned for his compelling performances, particularly in violent yet comedic roles, has carved a niche for himself in Indian cinema. His upcoming film, "Merry Christmas," opposite Katrina Kaif, has generated anticipation, although details about his character remain undisclosed. In a recent interview, Sethupathi shared insights into his choice of negative roles and revealed his fatigue with playing villains.

Making his digital and Bollywood debut in Raj and DK’s web series, "Farzi," this year, Sethupathi's collaboration with Katrina Kaif in "Merry Christmas" has already captured the audience's curiosity. Reflecting on his inclination toward negative roles, the actor stated, “I thought playing a villain is so much freedom. You kill people, and then you torture people, and you have fun in it, which you can’t do in real life.”

Sethupathi went on to elaborate, questioning the stereotypical portrayal of villains. He expressed, “Inside everybody, there’s a big criminal; we control them, which I want to try. In the same way, why villain should have an angry face always? Why villain doesn’t have comedy in his life? Why villain doesn’t have fun in his life? So, I want to have all those things and perspective.”

However, the actor disclosed that he has grown weary of playing antagonistic roles. He conveyed, “They started approaching me for regular kind of villain things. I already don’t have time to listen to stories in which I’m playing a hero; now I have to sit and listen to stories for villain roles, and it becomes an emotional block because I meet everybody.”

Acknowledging his need for a break and relaxation due to numerous approaches for pan-Indian movies, Sethupathi decided to step back temporarily. He emphasized, “I decided to stop and relax. Later, we will decide if something I really feel like, then I will start. That’s the reason, nothing else.”

As for "Merry Christmas," the film, directed by Sriram Raghavan, reportedly features Sanjay Kapoor, Radhika Apte, Aditi Govitrikar, and Tinnu Anand in supporting roles. Produced by Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures, the film holds promise as Sethupathi explores new dimensions in his acting career.
