Rohit Shetty has taken over the rights of the famed Telugu film Geetha Govindam starring Vijay Deverekonda and Rashmika Mandanna.

The Parasuram directed film, produced by Allu Aravind and Bunny Vasu, released on Independence Day last year and got very positive reviews. Made at a shoestring budget of Rs 5 crore, the film grossed over Rs 132 crore worldwide at the box office.

Sources inform us that Rohit is expected to only produce the film at the moment. “He has his hands full. But then if the need arises, he may direct the film as well. But at the moment, he is figuring out the logistics of the film and has issued a public notice that he is taking over the rights of the movie. The timing is such that even Arjun Reddy which was remade as the superhit Kabir Singh had the lead actor Vijay Deverakonda in a grey shade,” says a source in the trade.

Rohit’s last film Simmba starring Ranveer Singh – which was a remake of the Telugu film Temper went on to be a box office blockbuster. Meanwhile, he is already directing Sooryavanshi with Akshay Kumar and is producing Farah Khan’s remake of Satte Pe Satta.
