Singer Hayley Kiyoko was on the receiving end of quite some backlash when she spoke about Taylor Swift in an interview. Now, the Delicate singer is defending Hayley.
Hayley is openly gay and has featured female love interests in her music videos, even when music executives didn’t want her to.
“I’ve had several music industry executives say ‘You’re doing another music video about girls?’ I literally looked at them and was like, um, yeah… Taylor Swift sings about men in every single song and video, and no one complains that she’s unoriginal,” Hayley said in an interview with Refinery29. Some of Taylor’s fans viewed this comment as a dig against their idol, but she spoke out on Tumblr to respond to the quote.
“We should applaud artists who are brave enough to tell their honest romantic narrative through their art, and the fact is that I’ve never encountered homophobia and she has,” Taylor said and added, “It’s her right to call out anyone who has double standards about gay vs straight love interests.
