Tamil cinema gets a new mother
Charmila says that she wants to act in roles with substance irrespective of whether it is small or big.
Actress Charmila who once ruled the Malayalam industry as the top heroine and was also popular in Tamil went into oblivion due to problems in her personal life. Now she is back to K'town with four films in hand. Charmila talks to us about her hiatus and her current projects.
“As is the normal practice, when I made a comeback after a self-imposed sabbatical, I was offered only sister of the hero, mother or aunt roles. I thought why not accept powerful mother roles and shine in them instead of doing insignificant characters. My gut feeling proved and today I am acting in four Tamil flicks and in all I am either the hero’s mom or the heroine’s mom (smiles).”
Her lineup of movies includes Kanni Rasi where she plays hero Vemal’s mother, Sussendhran’s Genius as heroine’s mom, Mansoor’s Kadamban Paarai (heroines mom), Anand’s Puvial (heroine’ mom). In two of her upcoming Malayalam flicks, she would essay mother role, with the exception of Red Signal where she has been roped in as the lead protagonist.
An elated Charmila says, “It is a film which speaks about traffic rules and road safety, but a proper commercial subject. I loved the message in the film and hence accepted it without any hesitation when the makers approached me.” All said and done, Charmila says that she wants to act in roles with substance irrespective of whether it is small or big.
