Still from Joker

Guru Somasundaram, who is best known for his quirky and arresting roles, is making his debut as the lead in the upcoming political comedy Joker, directed by Raju Murugan of Cuckoo fame.

After thinking for a while, Guru remarks, “I would like to do bigger roles after Joker, but I will not say no to films like Jigarthanda and Aaranya Kaandam even if the role offered to me is not a meaty one.”

But, when queried about the title of the film Joker, he answers almost in an instant. “Everyone has anger against the society and government. But, no one dares to put their foot down and stand up against discrepancies. If one does, he becomes a joker in front of everyone else,” he says in one go.

He finds simplicity to be one of Raju Murugan’s virtues. “Many directors make you feel small with their knowledge of cinema and literature, but Raju Murugan, in spite of being a writer and well-read person, is plain and simple,” Guru explains.

An ardent fan of legendary actor Savitri, Guru would love to play the role of a gangster. He feels that the gangsters shown in films are not authentic depictions, and he would like to portray a real gangster on screen.

He has two more films in the pipeline — Paambhu Sattai and Kutrame Thandanai — which will hit the screens soon. Guru will also play a pivotal role in Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kathai, which has Ashwin of Mankatha fame in the lead role.
