Rakul Preet Singh is willing to push the envelope
In a candid chat with DC, the actress speaks about her upcoming film with Karthi, on balancing Tamil and Telugu projects and more.
I am a fan of Karthi’s mom’s cooking, I love her avial especially,” reveals Rakul Preet Singh, when DC caught up with her, while she was in the city for the audio launch of her upcoming flick Dheeran Adhikaram Ondru.
Directed by Vinoth of Sathurangavettai fame and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Rakul will be essaying the role of a proper Tamil ponnu in the movie, which stars Karthi in the lead.
In an exclusive, an excited Rakul shares her experiences working for DAO, besides opening up about the box office performance of Spyder, her desire to work more in Tamil and about her next with Selvaraghavan and Suriya.
Reacting to a query on whether she prefers Tollywood over Tamil she said, “I started off only in Tamil with two movies. They did not do well, but my very debut in Telugu was a big hit and in the last four years, I had completed 15 films in T’town. I did a Hindi film as well. I am getting a lot of Tamil offers now, but dates are overlapping. Then the bilingual Spyder happened. I watch a lot of Tamil and Telugu movies. I want to work in more Kollywood films.”
On Dheeran… she says, “It’s based on true events and it is shot in a realistic manner. I have watched Vinoth’s earlier film and it was very impressive. In this film, I play Karthi’s wife in a deglam role. Vinoth was initially apprehensive about my understanding of Tamil sensibilities. He gave me a clear picture of my role, besides a lot of references in terms of my looks and body language. Actually, I understand the language very well, but I can’t speak Tamil fluently and I enjoyed every bit of shooting.”
Heaping praises on co-star Karthi she reveals, “The scenes featuring myself and Karthi have come out so well. He is an amazing co-star. He is down to earth and helpful. He remembered all my dialogues. Whenever I used to forget, he would prompt them (smiles). When we were shooting in Chennai, Karthi’s mother used to send food from home. I loved all those millet items which she prepared. That way, I felt Chennai was my home.”
Ask her how she adapts herself to various scripts, the effervescent lady says, “It is an ongoing process. As an actress, I will acclimatise on screen — be it acting with the hero, villain or other supporting characters.”
The actress asserts that she wants to experiment with her roles in each and every film. “I want to do roles which people don’t expect from me. I want to push the envelope. And also, the industry is exploring with scripts like Vikram Vedha and Arjun Reddy which were blockbusters. Films like this change the idea of movie watching experience.”
The moment you talk about Spyder’s average show, pat she replies, “I don’t want to talk about the past. Some will work out and some may not — I give my 100 per cent to all my films. The rest lies with fate.”
We hear you have been roped in for Suriya-Selvaraghavan combo film. “Talks have been initiated.” What about Vijay-Murugadoss’ flick? “I am not sure of it, they may be talking to my manager,” she concludes.
