Euphoric over her first single
Born in Madurai, Swagatha had to go through an intense struggle before attaining recognition in Kollywood.
Gifted with a unique voice and an affable demeanour, the versatile playback singer Swagatha S Krishnan is over the moon. She is euphoric after her first independent single ‘Adiyathe’, released recently in YouTube garnering positive reviews and praise from music critics and listeners. Directed by Muhilan Murugesan and set against a village backdrop, the song is an inimitable blend of Carnatic and contemporary music.
Being in limelight for songs like ‘Aalaliloo’ from the movie Diya and ‘Alaa Alaa’ from Lakshmi, ‘Adiyathe’ comes as another feather to her cap.
Born in Madurai, Swagatha had to go through an intense struggle before attaining recognition in Kollywood. Extremely busy with her recordings and juggling between one studio and another she gave her time for a candid discussion on her musical repertoire.
“I grew up in Madurai and started learning music at the age of four years. I did my engineering in Bangalore and during the fourth year I used to find excuses to take part in musical events. I moved to Chennai in the year 2009 and took music as a full time profession”, she says.
Swagatha has sung songs like ‘Dirty Pondatti’ with Benny Dayal from the movie Kaatrin Mozhi and recently ‘Are you Ok baby’ for composer Premgi Amaren for the movie Zombie. She has collaborated with iconic stalwarts like K.J Yesudas for musical concerts. The ace singer recently launched her first independent song ‘Adiyathe’, composed, arranged and performed by her. She avers, “Sathyaprakash has sung the song along with me and Ko Sesha has written the lyrics. The song has been launched by renowned filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon in Behindwoods”.
Her younger sister Maya S. Krishnan is an accomplished actor in Kollywood. Her mother had to struggle very hard to raise them. She says, “I have three sisters. My mother and father have been extremely motivating and encouraging and supported to fulfil my dreams despite challenges in their own life. It is very difficult for the first generation artistes to gain entry in the film industry. I was able to stay here because I really loved the profession. I am extremely committed to music. Everyone who has passion should pursue it with sincerity. I have worked with prominent composers like A.R Rahman, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Devi Sri Prasad and Thaman to name a few”.
