Game Over toughest scores in my career: Ron Ethan Yohan
Iravaakaalam is yet another film with Ashwin which is yet to see the light of the day.
Hailing from a family of musicians, Ron Ethan Yohan (dad is popular guitarist Rajan), the young composer who made heads turn with his background score in Nayanthara starrer Maya is all excited about his forthcoming flick Game Over, a film directed by Ashwin where everything has to be conveyed through visuals and music. Ron talks to DC about the challenges involved while composing for GO, on Ashwin with whom he collaborated for the third time and upcoming Telugu movie among others.
“Game Over is a psychological thriller and there are no songs. The lead protagonist played by Taapsee, sitting on a wheel chair is always restless, as she has to confront a grave situation. As music plays a huge role, I have to communicate everything through music and sound (which are actually merged to the story) as what’s going through her mind, her inner and outer conflicts, and what is she up to. Since she is lonely, I have used lot of silence, which adds to the pulsating effect. And of course, everything has to flow in an organic manner. That way it was one of the toughest scores I have ever done.”
Iravaakaalam is yet another film with Ashwin which is yet to see the light of the day. “The movie is very special to me as I personally connected with the script when Ashwin pitched this film when we were doing Maya. The theme affected me and everything was magical in terms of music thereafter (smiles).”
On his work experiences with Ashwin he says, “I normally read the full script of a film before starting my work. What I like about Ashwin is that he is one filmmaker who just gives the narration and won’t suggest any references. He gives me a lot of creative freedom, which allows me to come out with the best output.”
Ron remarks that the much-anticipated Naragasooran by Karthik Naren, which is facing long delays, is one of his best works. “It is an emotionally intense drama featuring Arvind Swamy and Sandeep and the story is narrated from their perspectives. There are no songs. Music has to elevate the proceedings. Looking forward to it.” And it was Sigai, which fetched him Mohan Lal — Priyadarshan Malayalam flick Oppam, he reveals. Ron is also debuting in Telugu with a movie Madanam.
