The national debate around Mersal and the eventual buzz seem to have worked wonders for the Tamil star Vijay’s film (Adirindhi in Telugu) that has managed to become the biggest opener for the actor in Telugu so far. While the original Tamil version became a blockbuster, with a major boost from the controversy surrounding the dialogues on GST in the film, the audiences of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have also seem to have taken a keen interest to check them out.
While many Tamil actors have managed to become close to the Telugu audiences so far, despite being a big star in Kollywood, Vijay hasn’t managed to his the bull’s eye like his contemporaries Suriya and Vikram. In fact, most of his films have only fared decently in the past, with Jilla making decent money at the box office. Even his last blockbuster Theri, released as Policeodu in Telugu didn’t ring great money at the Telugu box office.
While it is not known if it’s the controversy or the content but the effect is visible at the box office openings numbers. Starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen as female leads, the film has music by A.R. Rahman and is directed by Atlee of Raja Rani fame.
