A call that made Rahman emotional
The Kuttrame Dhandanai actor adds that D 16 is his career's best.
After 30 years, a call of appreciation from his mentor’s wife, Shoba Chandrashekar (actor Vijay’s mother) for his performance in Dhruvangal Padhinaaru was heart-warming, says veteran actor Rahman (co-brother of AR Rahman) who debuted with the Tamil film Nilave Malare (1986) under SA Chandrashekar’s direction.
Rahman, who made a comeback in Tamil with the Jyothika flick 36 Vayadhinile, says he felt that it was time to celebrate D 16, which has been getting critical acclaim from all quarters. Sharing his happiness, the actor says, “So many people have been calling and appreciating my work in D16, ever since its release. But, it was this particular wish that was so special and unexpected! It was Ilayathalapathy’s mother, Shoba madam, who was all praise for me after she watched the movie. I was surprised that after three decades, she found my number and wanted to wish me. I should thank my director Karthik Naren for this.”
He further goes on to say, “When Karthik approached me for the role of the police officer, I wasn’t interested, but gave my nod reluctantly. When I shifted from hero to villainous roles, unfortunately I was typecast and could not come out of it. I’d done enough of negative cop roles with the likes of Ethiri, Raam to Billa, etc. — and when this 21-year-old boy Karthik came to me, I was shooting for a film, portraying a police officer as well! (laughs) I thought he wanted me for a supporting role with some actor playing the lead. But, he insisted that I listen to the full script. Only then did I realise that the entire film revolved around me and was convinced.”
The Kuttrame Dhandanai actor adds that D 16 is his career’s best. “I have got many awards and honours for this film. Many feel that I should even get a national award! If that happens, I’ll be happy.”
The actor is also keen to wield the megaphone one day. “I have written a few scripts which are ready. When the right time comes, I will take them on,” he reveals. His future films include Pagadi Aattam and Mugathirai.
