A few weeks ago, TFPC president Vishal announced that the film industry will go on a strike (including theatres) and there will be no shows from May 30th, demanding the state and central governments to take severe action on piracy and hike in ticket rates.

On his advice, some of the films were postponed to the end of June, including Jayam Ravi’s Vanamagan. Yet another reason for some films to have rescheduled the release dates was due to the fact that Baahubali 2 — which is still running to packed houses — has made theatre owners reluctant to disturb the momentum by releasing a new movie.

Now, overlooking Vishal’s request, some producers are planning to release their films — like Jiiva’s Sangili Bungili Kadhave Thora and Ganesh’s Inayathalam on May 19, as well as Samuthirakani’s Thondan and Radha Mohan’s Brindhavanam on May 26.

A multiplex owner, on the condition of anonymity, said, “It is not advisable to shut down theatres as summer holidays have begun and it will only result in revenue losses. We are going ahead with the releases and we will run them after May 30 too.”

Meanwhile, the newly-elected honchos of TFPC and other members including, Abirami Ramanathan and Paneerselvam, met the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edapadi K. Palanisami, on Friday, and submitted a memorandum with a few requests including the requisition to curb piracy.
