Over the course of past few months, Ey Sandakaara song from Irudhi Suttru has been everyone’s favourite not only because of Santosh Narayanan’s incredible composition, but also because of its singer’s unique voice. Dheekshitha a.k.a Dhee, who is still in her teens, has been the talk of the town as all the five songs she has sung so far have gone on to become chartbusters.

Brought up in Sydney, Dhee was born in a musical family. In an interview with DC, she speaks about her musical journey, her love for doing something creative and about how her family influenced her to take singing as her career.

“I never expected that my songs in IS would go on to become huge hits. I’m still getting congratulatory messages and I’m overwhelmed,” starts Dhee. Speaking about when she started taking music seriously, she says, “I frankly don’t know! Born in a family where mom Meenakshi, grand mom and even great grand mom are all renowned musicians, I think this art was inborn in me. But, I’m not much into Carnatic music like them. I prefer Jazz!”

The young girl’s first song was in Pizza II and she exclaims that she still feels surreal about rendering her first song — “I woke up, sang the song and then slept off. I don’t remember anything. That’s why, when I got very good feedback, it felt surreal!” she laughs.

Having rendered all the five songs for her stepfather Santosh Narayanan, she says that though it’s cool working with him, she claims that he’s a taskmaster when it comes to her — “He’s extremely chilled out with every other singer. But, when it comes to me, he turns strict. He gives honest criticisms and suggestions, and it reflects in the output.”

Explaining about how she balances her life between Sydney and Chennai, she says, “It’s an incredible feeling whenever I come to Chennai. People here are so warm and I love to hangout here. I miss the city whenever I go back home!”
Sharing her multifaceted interests, she says, “I always have penchant to do creative stuff. I love fashion designing and interior designing. Apart from this, I’m a very good painter too.” When queried if acting would someday add to her list of interests, she says she wouldn’t — “I’ll make a terrible actress! So, featuring in movies is not on  my cards anytime soon.”

On a concluding note, when asked about her longterm aspirations, Dhee says, “I perform several gigs in Australia. I would like to work on singles and independent albums very soon!”
