Chennai: Actor and producer Vishal said he was surprised at Tamil Film Producers Council’s decision to temporarily suspend him from the primary membership.

“I am yet to receive official letter from the council. Ideally it should have come to me first and then to press. But here, it has gone to press as a statement without any office bearer’s signature but only with a seal. I don’t know the reason as to why they had suspended me from the council,” he said at a hurriedly convened press conference.

He adds, “I am surprised that a casual statement of mine about ‘bonda and bajji’ was taken so seriously and led to this situation. I have no personal grouse against any office-bearer of the producers council. I stand for the welfare of all producers and I raise voice for their wellbeing.   And I will continue to ask questions and there’s nothing wrong in it. They wanted me to apologize for what I have said in that interview. Why should I? ”.

When asked his future course of action, he said, “Let me get a proper notification from council. If this can happen to a producer like Vishal, imagine the plight of small producers (smiles). I will handle it legally but will not file defamation case on them”.

“I raised piracy issue several times and gave them evidence too. But TFPC never acted on it. Many producers are suffering today. This is an issue that the entire industry should fight united”.

When queried if the suspension was the result of the reports that Vishal would be contesting in the forthcoming TFPC’s elections scheduled in January 2017, he replied, “We have a team of youngsters from my side ready to face elections for producers council. I request them to allow elections to be conducted in free and fair manner,” he said.
